Spirits among the stones
The state of Colorado might be 150 years old, but people have been living - and dying - on the land for far longer than that. Hundreds of cemeteries predate statehood, and events like the Pikes Peak Gold Rush drew in miners from far and wide who never left, even after death.
From the mysterious blue dancing lights of Silver Cliff that captured the attention of National Geographic, to the haunting tale of a miner whose violin melody echoes through the valleys from his mountainside grave, there are many stories of ghostly residents still roaming among the stones. The cemetery of Buckskin Joe is the only place where a mysterious woman in a black veil appears, though some say she's visiting all those she couldn't save from the 1861 smallpox epidemic. In Central City there are rumors of a woman who comes down from the nearby hills twice a year to tend to a specific grave in the Masonic Cemetery, a routine she has kept for over a century. In Denver's old city cemetery, now known as Cheesman Park, around 2,000 graves lie not-so-quietly beneath the landscaping, and on the northern side of the state capital, Riverside Cemetery is known for a crying spirit that appears among its tall, ornate monuments.
Join author Erin Taylor on a tour through Colorado's cemeteries where the life and legends of many a former resident live on.
