One bad throw of the dice leaves Steve Costigan broke on the Singapore waterfront, where a sailor-boxer's fists may be his quickest route back to money. Told in Steve's own colloquial voice, this comic adventure turns his unshakable confidence into a source of momentum and mischief. His blunt observations, masculine bravado and talent for meeting trouble head-on give the narrative the immediacy of a sailor's yarn delivered between bouts. A proposal to invest in Korean Copper stock promises sudden wealth, provided Steve can raise the necessary cash. His answer is a winner-take-all prize fight, but speculation and violence prove equally uncertain ways to make a fortune. Boxing is both livelihood and entertainment here, while gambling, deception and organised crime keep every apparent opportunity unstable. The contrast between Steve's certainty and the risks surrounding him sharpens the comedy without diminishing the force of the fight action. Beyond the ring, waterfront drinking and gambling districts create a setting where money changes hands quickly and loyalty is tested by schemes, street violence and the prospect of an easy profit. The first-person sailor dialect carries the story through comic exaggeration, crime intrigue and bruising action, making Steve's view of events as compelling as the dangers themselves. This compact work of boxing fiction captures the reckless logic of a man prepared to stake his body on the next chance to win. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
