The book opens with Ivan Bunin's reflections, where he describes Chekhov's remarkable intellect, wit, and kindness. Bunin shares anecdotes that highlight Chekhov's humble beginnings and his evolution into one of the most influential writers of his time. He emphasizes Chekhov's ability to observe human nature with unparalleled clarity, capturing the essence of life in his stories. Bunin's admiration for Chekhov is palpable, as he discusses the profound impact Chekhov's work had on the Russian literary landscape. Maksim Gorky contributes to the collection by recounting his personal encounters with Chekhov, emphasizing the playwright's deep empathy for the struggles of the common people. Gorky reflects on Chekhov's commitment to social issues and his ability to blend humor with tragedy in his writing. He provides insights into Chekhov's creative process, illustrating how the playwright drew inspiration from everyday life and the complexities of human emotions. Gorky's reminiscences further enrich the understanding of Chekhov as a man who championed the marginalized voices of society.
