In the opening chapters, the Eltons delve into the passion for collecting books as a reflection of cultural and intellectual trends. They provide biographical sketches of influential figures such as Sir Robert Cotton, who built one of the earliest significant libraries in England, and Thomas Jefferson, whose extensive collection laid the foundation for the Library of Congress. The authors emphasize how these collectors not only amassed books but also shaped literary tastes and preserved works that might otherwise have been lost to time. Throughout the book, the Eltons combine scholarly research with engaging narratives, creating a rich tapestry of bibliophilic history. They discuss various collecting methods, the importance of provenance, and the impact of collectors on the publishing industry. Ultimately, The Great Book-Collectors serves as both a tribute to the love of books and a historical account of the individuals who dedicated their lives to collecting and preserving literary treasures.
