the last 20 pages saved this book for me, they were unbelievably moving and i will be rereading them but i had a difficult time with the exaggerated pathos in the female characters and that he combined amazing social realism with such melodrama i cannot relate nor sympathize with caricatures and i hate when authors present their beliefs as hard, solid facts
