Rezension

It will take years to unfurl the tentacles Epstein wrapped around finance, law, media and politics. But Nobody s Girl floats free, self-assured and self-contained a true American tragedy. The devastation is in the details.
Alexandra Jacobs, The New York Times Book Review

Make no mistake: this is a book about power, corruption, industrial-scale sex abuse and the way in which institutions sided with the perpetrator over his victims. . . . But it is also a book about how a young woman becomes a hero. . . . A deft [and] smart book. . . . A clear-eyed and necessary account. . . . Important [and] courageous.
Emma Brockes, The Guardian

Nobody s Girl feels like an act of defiance not just against those who terrorized her for so long but also those who, over the years, queried her version of events. . . . Giuffre doesn t deserve our scrutiny so much as our admiration.
The Telegraph (UK)

By retelling the story from her own perspective, [Giuffre] cuts through the salacious details that became the stuff of tabloid headlines. . . and shows the reader the stark truth of who she was. . . . It is a personal triumph that she chose to speak up.
The Observer (UK)

Giuffre s narrative conclusively eliminates all but the most unflattering explanations for Andrew s association with Epstein. The book benefits greatly from Giuffre s collaborator, the highly regarded American magazine journalist Amy Wallace. Wallace never overwhelms Giuffre s voice, but her presence is clear in the journalistic rigor that underlies the text.
The Times (UK)

absolutely heartbreaking...

Bewertungsnummer: 2689694

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

This book is a harrowing testament to the life of a true survivor. The story is told with such brutal honesty that readers not only feel uncomfortable but also find it difficult to comprehend and absorb what they have read. Theoretically, the memoir can be divided into two parts—the first part describes the cruel and brutal world in which she suffered not only at the hands of Epstein but also at the hands of countless other people. In the second part of the book, we join the author as she begins a journey of healing. Virginia R. Giuffre convinces all skeptics, because her descriptions are so consistent and detailed—I don’t think anyone could make this up. She provides photos and other facts to prove the events she survived. Right at the beginning, the author begins to recount her childhood with brutal rationality, describing her very ambivalent relationship with her mother and the first sexual assaults by her own family and friends. She proceeds in a very structured and chronological manner. Again and again, readers are confronted with how young Virginia is when these unspeakable things happen to her. One mourns and feels every emotion with the author, who herself displays a clinical rationality that is simply frightening. What this young woman experienced is something one would not wish on anyone. Incredibly moving, honest, and, precisely because of the difficult subject matter, well worth reading.
